A smooth APK inspection (the Dutch MOT) starts with good preparation. A few simple checks help you avoid an unnecessary failure and extra costs. Here is our complete checklist:

Preparation (1-2 weeks ahead)

  • Check the expiry date: Look at your registration certificate or the RDW app to see when the APK expires. You may have it inspected up to two months before the expiry date without losing validity.
  • Book an appointment: Schedule online or by phone in good time at our RDW-recognised inspection station.
  • Service history: Have the service booklet and previous invoices ready.

Quick self-check

  • Lights: Test all bulbs, indicators, brake lights, and number-plate lighting.
  • Wipers and fluid: Check the wiper blades and top up the washer fluid.
  • Tyres: Check the tread depth (minimum 1.6 mm) and tyre pressure.
  • Fluids: Check the oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels.

During the inspection

  • APK inspector: Our certified inspector checks the brakes, suspension, emissions, lighting, and safety systems.
  • Done while you wait: Most inspections are completed while you wait with a cup of coffee.
  • Minor repairs: Simple repair points can often be fixed straight away, so your car passes in a single visit.

After the inspection

  • Approval: On approval, we report it directly to the RDW; you don't have to do anything yourself.
  • Advice: We give you honest advice about upcoming maintenance, with no surprises.
